Fire Blight

Fire Blight is a bacterial disease that attacks many types of plants, especially Pears and Apples. It is a common problem on Flowering Pears such as Evergreen Pears, Bradford Pears, Aristocrat Pears and others. It slowly works its way down the branches from the tips destroying wood and leaves as it goes. The best way to avoid Fire Blight is to choose a tree that is not susceptible to it to begin with.

If it’s too late for that, you may want to treat your tree with a copper fungicide spray application in the winter and/or an antibiotic application at bloom time. You have to hire a licensed applicator for the antibiotic spray. If you have a severe case of Fire Blight you will need to trim out the affected parts. Mistletoe is a plant parasite. It roots into the trees’ branches and sucks up water and raw materials from the tree. If there is enough mistletoe in a tree it can be sucked dry and die. Trees with mistletoe frequently have other problems, like wood boring insects. It is best to take care of mistletoe during the leafless season.
